Inland Open Water Safety and Rescue

Safety and Rescue course on the open water

What is it?

The British Canoeing Awarding Body Inland Open Water Safety and Rescue Course is the perfect course for those wishing to start to look after others on the water in a Moderate environment.

It is a multi-craft award, allowing you to learn how to rescue canoes, kayaks, and paddleboards from whichever craft you are most comfortable with.

Where is it?

The inland open-water safety environment is waters up to 500 meters offshore in Force 4 winds.

Who's it for?

Perfect for people operating in clubs and centres that are starting to help with the care of novice and intermediate paddlers on the water.

This course is all about giving us the skills to look after all types of paddlers we might find ourselves on the water with. With the skills we learn in this course, we will be in a position to move on to thinking about caring for people in the moderate open water environment once we complete a leadership or coaching award.

We'll be looking at everything from planning a safe trip to what to carry and how to get help if it goes wrong.

We'll spend some time in the water, looking at what to do if we have an out-of-boat experience.

The philosophy of the British Canoeing Awarding Body is that safety courses are opportunities to learn without the worry of being "assessed".

Depending on what you go on to do in the future, you may be assessed on the skills you gain in this course during a leadership or coaching award, but during the course, we'll be in learning mode.
