Trip Itinerary
Day 1 — Inverness → Loch Veyatie
Meet at Tiso in Inverness for introductions and kit checks before transferring west. Launch canoes onto Loch Veyatie, a long glacial loch framed by the imposing shape of Suilven—wild camp on its shore, with the mountain skyline glowing at sunset.
Day 2 — Loch Veyatie → Fionn Loch
Continue west along Loch Veyatie before portaging into Fionn Loch. Paddle through waters scattered with small islands and take in views of Stac Pollaidh and Cùl Mòr. In the afternoon, stretch your legs with a short moorland walk before camping on a remote headland.
Day 3 — Fionn Loch → Suilven Trek
Today is a highlight: leave the canoes and climb Suilven via its eastern approach. The summit panorama reveals Inverpolly’s patchwork of lochs and the Assynt hills beyond. Descend to rejoin the canoes and camp by the water’s edge, celebrating a big day with a well-earned meal.
Day 4 — Fionn Loch → Loch Sionascaig
Portage into Loch Sionascaig, a vast loch with dozens of islets. Paddling here feels like exploring a labyrinth, with ever-changing views of Cùl Beag and Stac Pollaidh. Stop in hidden bays for lunch or a swim—evening camp on one of the loch’s wild shores.
Day 5 — Loch Sionascaig → Inverness
Make a final paddle through Sionascaig’s winding waters before the return journey east. After a relaxed picnic, transfer back to Tiso in Inverness, finishing the expedition with tired arms, muddy boots, and unforgettable memories of Inverpolly.

What skill level should I have to join a Wilderness Journey trip?
Our Wilderness Journeys are primarily holiday trips designed for you to get out and enjoy the wilderness. However, depending on your trip, you should consider the following:
How comfortable are you living in the outdoors?
You should be at ease with spending long periods outside in the elements.
Scotland is renowned for experiencing all four seasons in a single day. However, more often than not, it tends to be cold and damp, so you will need to find contentment in that and consider anything else a bonus.
What about camping?
We use two-person tents to help minimise our environmental footprint. We aim to share tents only within booking parties; however, this is not always possible. If this presents an issue, please get in touch with us, and we can discuss options.
Padding skill?
The Rannoch Crossing is an Advanced "Red" Trip, meaning we’ll be on more complex rivers and open, exposed lochs.
You'll need to have done some canoeing before and be comfortable spending up to 6 hours a day on the water, with some breaks happening afloat rather than landing.
Given the nature of the more complex rivers (class 3/3+), we'll also be in and out of the boats, utilising traditional skills such as lining. This means you'll need good fitness and balance as we move over uneven terrain.
Remember, you'll want to cultivate mental space to enjoy the journey rather than merely survive. If you're uncertain about your skill level, please email us at hello@cagadventures.com so we can discuss your suitability for this Wilderness Journey.
Who do I paddle with?
Our Wilderness Journeys are designed as tandem trips. You can either paddle with the same person each day or swap partners daily.
What if I want to paddle solo?
Please let us know before your trip if you want to paddle solo. We may be able to accommodate you, but you might find that one of our Learning Journeys better suits you.
